The control room is where critical decisions about sound quality and balance are made. The acoustic environment needs to be designed so that engineers hear an accurate representation of the sounds being recorded and mixed.

They need to know with total confidence that the sound at the listening position is the same as the sound being recorded. If the studio acoustics are not neutral, then engineers never know whether they are hearing the sound of the music, the sound of the room, or an unknown combination of both.

Any deficiencies in control room design may make an engineer over-compensate EQ, so that music mixed in that room does not sound right when played anywhere else. A poorly-designed control room that accentuates bass frequencies, making them appear louder than they really are, will cause the engineer to try to compensate by cutting out those frequencies to make the mix sound balanced in that room.

What actually gets recorded is a sound which is deficient in bass. It will sound fine in that control room, because the room itself is adding the bass boost needed to make it sound right, but the recording will sound bass-deficient when played elsewhere. Naturally, an engineer working in such a room develops a reputation for having cloth ears. Clients aren't interested in hearing excuses for poor mixes - and a person is easier to blame than a room.

An isolation booth is a device used to prevent a person or people from seeing or hearing certain events. Isolation booths are also frequently used in audio recordings, with non-reflective walls, that eliminate potential reverberations.

A recording studio is a facility for sound recording. Ideally, the space is specially designed by an acoustician to achieve the desired acoustic properties (sound diffusion, low level of reflections, adequate reverberation time for the size of the ambient, etc.). Different types of studios record bands and artists, voiceovers and music for television shows, movies, cartoons, and commercials, and/or even record a full orchestra. The typical recording studio consists of a room called the "studio", where instrumentalists and vocalists perform; and the "control room", which houses the equipment for recording, routing and manipulating the sound. Often, there will be smaller rooms called "isolation booths" present to accommodate loud instruments such as drums or electric guitar, to keep these sounds from being audible to the microphones that are capturing the sounds from other instruments or vocalists.
